Barn Cats (aka Rodent Control)

JJ started off life in a huge feral cat colony at Springhill College,  but now he's living the good life here on the farm.  Technically JJ is a "front porch kitty" because he hangs out on the front porch more than around the barn, but he's a good mouser and always comes down to the barn at feeding time.

Frankie was adopted through a rescue organization along with three other cats.  Frankie is super friendly and loves to be petted.  He too is a good hunter as you can see in the picture of him with the black racer.

Zurg was adopted along with his brother Buzz Lightyear.  Buzz Lightyear has taken up with our neighbors, but Zurg is always around.  He's also a very good hunter and will bring moles and other rodents to the barn on a regular basis.

Samantha was adopted along with Frankie.  She's a bit shy around the farm, but roams over several fields and eats with several neighbors as well as our barn kitties.

Zipper and his brother Slinky came here as kittens.  Both are mighty hunters but don't like to be handled too much.

Slinky is Zipper brother.  He is very shy around people, but never misses a meal time.

Wubbzy is our daughter's cat who is spoiled rotten and comes in the house for a little while every few days.  He is carried around more than he ever gets to walk it seems.

T-Rex is our son's cat and Wubbzy's brother.  These brothers eat in the barn with the other cats and are extremely docile thanks to constant handling by our children.

Snippet is another rescue from MS and sibling to Ashes.  She's a real sweetheart and really calm around children and loud noises.

Ashes is another rescue from MS.  She's a long haired torti and sister to Snippet.

"Satin" & "Velvet"
These are both Rex rabbits and they each had a litter of babies Spring '09.

We kept a brown baby and a white spotted baby from Velvet.  Pictures soon.
Satin has been sold, but we still have Velvet and her two daughters.

"Quacky"
In the Spring 2010 this baby duck was found wandering down a busy street in the city of Mobile.
At the time we didn't have a clue what breed it was but once he turned about 6 months old we were able
to determine that Quacky is a Muscovey.  The picture on the far right is how he looks today.

Turkey
We have a female turkey for a pet plus she lays eggs too!

Chickens
We always have a variety of chickens and in addition to the Buff Orpingtons (above left) we also have some Americanas - Easter egg layers (above right), Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks (above right) and a few rare breeds on occasion.

"Herman"
This is our plecto algae eater.  We have a 30 gallon fresh water aquarium and Herman helps keep it clean, plus he's much more interesting than regular tropical fish.

*Update: Sadly Herman only lived about 10 months so we purchased Herman II.  Herman II only lived about 8 months so we decided either we didn't have enough algae or something in our water wasn't working for the plectos.  Our fish (mostly tetras) are all doing well so we may try a plecto again in a year or two.

"Nemo" & "Dory"
These are two hermit crabs we brought back from our trip to Destin, FL.  They are really neat pets and fun for the whole family.

*Update: Unfortunately Dory has disappeared.  It's a mystery, but the purple shell remains with no hermit crab in it and all the other shells in the tank are empty other than Nemo.
